Trump vs. Musk: Populism and Power in the U.S.

Periphery of the West or a sovereign civilization? Ibero-America in the struggle between American elites

August 15, 2025

They wanted to “Make America Great Again” and “Conquer Mars” – Donald Trump and Elon Musk were the public faces of the Populist revolution in the United States of America. Whereas the cooperation started as an open “bromance” the once peaceful cooperation now lies in shambles.

Whereas Trump strived for a compromise with the old Neocon elites, betraying his MAGA base, leading a war against Iran and push through his “big beautiful bill”, in practice giving the USA a better position in it’s trade war against everyone and strengthening the position of the military-industrial-complex, Musk had a more idealistic approach.

The self-declared Libertarian wanted to cut down the US-budget (in terms of military and bureaucracy), the reason behind his “DOGE” project, and stay true to the original Nationalist outlook of MAGA focusing on the Western hemisphere.

Furthermore he publicly accused the US-president on X that his name is on the infamous Epstein list, which’s existence was denied by Trump, and therefore not keeping up his promise to publish it in order to fight the US-deep-state. As a consequence, Musk announced the America party, a refuge for MAGA.

But what will be the consequences of this new political force entering US politics and what does it mean for Ibero-America?

First of all, everything depends on Musk being able to gather enough grass rout support for his third party. The United States are a country traditionally divided into partisans of the Democrats and Republicans. He needs to focus his attention on a 4 states in order to gain 2-3 Senat seats and 8-10 House districts in order to be the “deciding vote on contentious laws” and fight the “uniparty system”.

As Republicans and MAGA are fighting each other, however a July 15 poll conducted by Echelon Insights shows that the Globalist oriented Democrats would win with a comfortable margin.

Whereas Musk could prove to be a true Populist and therefore more fitting for the hopes and dreams of the MAGA camp, Ibero America would not profit from him gaining power, besides from the effect of destabilizing the USA. In 2020 Musk commented the coup d’etat in Ecuador with the words “We will coup whoever we want” showing that Ibero American Lithium is more important to him than equal relations with the Ibero America.

At the end of the day, the billionaire and oligarch Musk is as Western centric in his thinking as Donald Trump. Ibero America holds in their thinking only a place as an orientalized periphery: It’s the place where you have deport immigrants back to, whose ressources you need to plunder and which’s sovereignty you have to destroy in order to serve the interests of the American empire.

As a consequence, neither Trump nor Musk are good for the nations of Ibero America. Only their own strength and multipolar institutions like BRICS can lead Ibero America into a sovereign and prosperous future.
