Is the unification of Moldova and Romania feasible? Why Maia Sandu wants her country to be erased from the map

January 24, 2026

Sandu: “I would vote for the unification with Romania”

In a recent interview with the British podcast “The Rest is politics” Moldavian president Maia Sandu stated, that “if we had a referendum, I would vote for the unification with Romania.”

In the interview she further argued, that for a small country and democracy like Moldova, it would be getting “(…) harder and to harder to survive as a sovereign country and resist Russia.”

But why does a politician like Sandu wants her country to be erased from the map?

Moldova: Between the West and Eurasia

First, the pro-Western and Globalist politician Sandu finds herself in a precarious situation: Situated between Ukraine and Romania, Moldova acts as a bridge between the Western-European and Russian-Eurasian world. Whereas linguistical and cultural ties between Bucharest and Tiraspol still exist, Moldova with it’s complex ethnic makeup consisting out of Moldovans, Romanians, Russians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians and Gagauz is still a part of the Russian-Eurasian world.

Due to Western warmongering against Russia, the waning Ukrainian war effort and the rapid militarization of Romania – in 2024 the so far largest NATO airbase, Mihai Kogalniceanu, was erected there – Western elites strive for the integration of Moldova into their hemisphere to further encircle and contain Russia.

The internationally non-recognized breakaway republic Transnistria inside the eastern part of Moldova is home to approximately 1.500 Russian soldiers of the Operational Group of Russian Forces guarding the Cobasna ammunition depot and the very existence of Transnistria, a true thorn in the side of NATO.

Whereas Kiev tried to provoke a direct conflict with Tiraspol since the start of the Special Military Operation in 2022, the Russian army group there has so far refrained from activating a new front in the war for Ukraine.

This of course could change rapidly, if Russian forces would start advancing on Odessa, one of the Kiev regime’s last lifelines or if the “coalition of the willing” – France and Great Britain – should directly intervene to occupy the big Black Sea port.

The next battleground in NATO’s war against Russia?

Many geopolitical analysts assume that Moldova could become the next battle ground in the Western war for hegemony over Eurasia. Whereas two thirds of all Moldovans oppose the unification with Bucharest, absorbing the country into Romania would mean it’s entrance into the EU and NATO at once.

Therefore, the Globalist elites will – as they did during the last elections in Moldova and Romania manipulated by the West – do everything to guarantee the integration of Chisinau and Tiraspol into the Western orbit. But against them, there are two-thirds of the Moldovans, who oppose the Gloablist’s aspirations.

And sooner or later, the Russian army will create a fait accompli in Ukraine, which will nullify any integration of Moldova into the West. But until then, the situation in Moldova remains unclear – weather Chisinau will be directly involved in the battle for hegemony over Ukraine or not is still open.
