The impact of the Iran war on the global economy

March 18, 2026

We are facing what could be the most significant war of the third millennium – even more significant than the war in Ukraine – which will determine the fate of the global economy.

We are seeing significant effects on fuel prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as major upheavals in neighbouring countries where their once-secure economic models are under threat.

Meanwhile, we are watching in astonishment as Anglo-American vulture funds potentially impose capital controls, blocking full returns on investments and even accelerating the process of de-dollarisation of the global economy.

In any case, the US economic colossus is faltering at the very heart of its financial power, and this calls for reflection.

Iran is proving capable of taking the war against the United States to a scale never seen before, not even during the 1973 oil crisis: the entirety of Trump’s geopolitical strategy in his second presidential term is under threat from a mid-tier regional power that has been preparing for this clash for almost five decades.

The United States has entered this conflict without a clear strategy for confrontation and has been dragged into this dead end by the Israeli government.

Trump should recall what befell the Roman Emperor Publius Licinius Valerianus, who reigned from 253 to 260 AD, when he was captured by the King of the Sassanid Persian Empire, Shapur I, along with tens of thousands of Roman legionaries. Never before had Rome suffered such a crushing defeat and humiliation.

He was forced to serve as a footstool whenever the Persian king mounted his horse, and later historical accounts even relate that Valerian died after being forced to drink liquid gold, so that he might realise the cost of his ambition and audacity in invading Persia (the ancient name for Iran).

What is clear is that the land of Iran has a history that many in the United States are unaware of, the result of thousands and thousands of years of experience and wisdom which Trump seems to lack, given the mistakes he is continually making.
