Conference: The meeting between Lula and Trump

May 15, 2026

With the sponsorship of the Expert Analytical Association “Sovereignty”, it was organized in Brazil, held a discussion on the high-level meeting that took place in Washington, on May 7, between the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

It is pertinent to mention that this meeting of heads of state was awaited with great expectation by broad and significant political, economic, military and intellectual sectors of both countries, as well as by other factors of power in the international order.

By virtue of this, Raphael Machado, André Soares, Arthur Pavezzi and Arthur Magalhães Moura de Lima, members of Association “Sovereignty”, were part of this conference that was broadcast live on the channel “Geoforça Brasil”. The debate covered key aspects such as politics, diplomacy, security, economics, energy and, of course, the geopolitical dimension.

Among the different considerations presented by the aforementioned analysts, we can mention those formulated by Arthur Magalhães Moura de Lima, who said that the government headed by Lula wants to improve relations with Trump, reduce the impact of the Brazilian right-wing on the factors of U.S. power and that the “real concerns” existing due to the limitation of diplomacy “to defend our interests” were clearly seen.

For his part, André Soares said that Lula went to the United States to, among other purposes, obtain Trumpist and Atlanticist support in view of the next presidential elections that will take place in the last quarter of 2026.

He remarked that, at precise levels of Brazilian decision-making circles, the purpose of subordinating the country’s national interest to Anglo-American agendas continues and recalled that these Atlanticist actors pursue the goals of appropriating vital resources such as critical minerals and maintaining regional control in continental terms.

Meanwhile, Arthur Pavezzi also agreed that the main result of the Washington meeting was the revitalization of the expansive influence of U.S. hegemonism over Brazil and South America and said that Lula emphasized, before Trump, the list of Brazilian citizens who are sanctioned by the Trump Administration to be excluded from such sanctions. He used the term “esoteric Lulism” in the conversation to define what he sees as a practical inconsistency of the president of Brazil between the sovereignty he declaims in his speeches and the real facts.

When it was his turn, Raphael Machado emphasized the structural contradictions that Lula’s government has since, in his view, the ruling party, PT, does not “solve substantial problems”, but he did not fail to remember that these failures are also typical of institutionalized politics in the country and that these contradictions would be a copy of the American model. He shared his opinion that Lula, in the multipolar area, is no better than Jair Bolsonaro, questioning the role of the Brazilian president in relation to the BRICS.

In short, the experts expressed, with full freedom, their respective points of view and appealed to the public to join – in one way or another- the Association “Sovereignty” project.
