Wednesday, June 24, 2026 will go down in history as one of the darkest and most tragic days in the history of Venezuela, and of the region, since that day the earth was shaken by two powerful earthquakes, producing an earthquake of the “doublet” type as it is called in geology. The first on a scale of 7.2 and the second with a scale of 7.5 on the Richter scale. Causing enormous devastation, unfortunately with almost 5000 deaths, around 17,000 injured and 68,000 missing. The economic damage is estimated at around $6.7 billion
Regarding the response and actions of the Venezuelan government, it has been highly questioned, because there are several national and international reports that question and point to negligence and inefficiency in the response provided from Caracas. In general terms, it is determined that there were failures ranging from the number of troops deployed, their training, the delay in their deployment, added to an almost complete absence of specialized national rescue groups and a deep institutional weakness, bureaucratic obstacles and corruption.
The analysis of humanitarian aid by the United States has been a cause for debate, taking into account that from the beginning and due to the economic sanctions imposed on Venezuela by Washington, the South American country has not been able to access emergency credits from the different multilaterals. We must also understand how the situation is in the broader context after the capture of Nicolás Maduro. Washington obtained a very broad and deep interference in the country, although indirectly.
The United States has allocated more than $380 million dollars for humanitarian assistance, as well as has established an air bridge controlled directly by Washington, without the participation or coordination of Caracas, this denotes the power of action of the United States in the new political reality of Venezuela.
In contrast to the humanitarian aid destined and channeled from the BRICS bloc of countries, it has focused on material aid, focused on machinery and logistics, in addition China approved an aid package of more than $14 million, also to provide specialized heavy machinery, satellite images and deploy Chinese state-owned companies for infrastructure. Russia, for its part, sent several flights of humanitarian aid translated into tons of assistance, including medical supplies, tents and food.
Another member of the BRICS is Brazil, the South American giant and neighbor of Venezuela. Brazil initially focused on participating directly in the rescue work, sending specialized teams, both from different fire departments and its Armed Forces, for the arduous search and rescue work.
It is also noteworthy the participation of India in the assistance and aid to Caracas, sending for this purpose a specialized contingent of 41 soldiers of the Indian army, in addition to a modular field hospital and medical supplies. It is clear, then, the importance that the BRICS countries give to humanitarian assistance and its geopolitical weight also measured from this dimension.
Another important actor that has joined in providing assistance and aid to Venezuela has been a state with which Caracas had broken diplomatic relations for 17 years. Caracas’ abrupt turn in its foreign policy after the fall of Maduro is not surprising. A year ago it would have been unthinkable for Caracas to approach and seek to strengthen ties with Telaviv, and that is precisely what is happening. No more and no less, the government of Delcy Rodríguez has signed agreements and commitments with senior Israeli officials for the removal of debris after the natural disaster, according to a diagnosis by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), it is estimated that approximately 1,025 million tons of debris are the waste and materials generated after the earthquakes of June 24, 2026.
The agreement with Israel goes further, and is intended to grant Israeli companies permits to start their operations in Venezuelan territory for the reconstruction of the affected areas, both in Caracas and in the State of La Guaira. Like the United States, Israel sees the possibility after the fall of Nicolás Maduro and taking advantage of the clear submission of Delcy Rodríguez to the dynamics of US power, they also intend to gain space and power in the Latin American region gradually.
All this must be read and understood from the struggle and dispute of the different Geo-Civilizational Poles, between the Western Globalist power, which defends the current Unipolar order versus the new paradigm and systematic change of power and global governance, towards a New Multipolar Global Order promoted by the countries of the BRICS Bloc. Latin America is a region of great importance for the vectors of global power, it is a region that will be widely disputed, as President Trump has already made very clear, implementing an aggressive interference in Latin America with his new National Security Strategy, which is nothing more than a re-empowered adaptation of the pernicious Monroe Doctrine.
Regarding the role of the international media, and their work during the days of the natural tragedy, criticism and condemnation of what Caracas calls a clear bias and media manipulation to tarnish and damage the image of the Government of Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has been unleashed from Caracas. The narratives are contrasted with two diametrically opposed evaluations regarding the Venezuelan Central Government’s handling of the tragedy.
The criticism of the coverage of international media mainly related to Washington, points out from Caracas that these media have installed a narrative of discredit and bad image of their government in the management of the natural disaster to manipulate international public opinion, according to Caracas. This is not new, it is known that the monopoly of the flow of global information is still held by the West and does not miss any opportunity to manipulate the Mass Media against the antagonists of Washington and the Global West.
We cannot fail to emphasize the demographic consequences and effects that the Venezuelan population will have after this terrible tragedy that has mourned thousands and thousands of families who have lost everything.
Due to the natural tragedy, it is expected that a new wave of Venezuelan migration would be unleashed in the region. According to the International Organization for Migration, IOM, it is estimated that approximately 6.76 million people would have been affected by the earthquakes and the Observatory for the Venezuelan Diaspora indicates that in the current conditions, due to the effects of the tragedy, many people will be forced to migrate, and those who were thinking of returning will not be able to do so, at least not in the immediate future. since after the tragedy, the economic and social crisis that the country has been enduring for more than a decade as a result of the economic embargo of the United States is deepening.
This terrible and unfortunate natural disaster that has hit the nation and the Venezuelan people, shows once again how a strategy of control and absolute domination over Latin America is being forged and consolidated, everything serves the regional and global dominant power that refuses to lose power and entrenches itself in the hemisphere for this purpose.
