Due to the international interest in the forest fires that are currently occurring in vast regions of Spain, our expert member, Juan Antonio Aguilar, was summoned by Dr. Ezequiel Bistoletti to share his perspective as an analyst and to convey his opinion as a Spanish citizen to the canal community “Demoliendo Mitos”.

True to his style, and speaking specifically, Aguilar began by saying that “Spain is a failed state” and that, according to the development of events, “there is no capacity for response by any of the administrations” (in reference to national and regional governments) and that this alarming episode of fires, with the consequent negligence of the respective authorities,  it is not purely and exclusively due to the monocausal and even hackneyed factor of “climate change”.

“Of course, the authorities blame all this. To whom? Well, to climate change because they are not going to blame themselves for reducing fire prevention budgets, for not allowing the normal tasks in the field that have always allowed the cleaning of forests, such as letting animals graze or collecting firewood or fallen pine cones; all these kinds of things that all they do is turn the forests into authentic fuel deposits that any flame is enough for everything to start burning at a frightening speed,” said our specialist.

He reported that, at the time of issuing his opinion, on the night of Saturday, July 25, there were around 100 thousand people evacuated or confined with “dozens of villages evacuated, more than 40 thousand hectares have already been burned or, possibly, will be burned in the coming days and properties and numerous animals were lost.”

In front of Bistoletti’s watchful eye, Aguilar continued to substantiate “It must be said that, in the face of this official thesis – repeated by all the charlatans in the media, the reality is that between 5% and 10% of fires are due to natural causes. 40% are caused by man, that kind of ‘climate change with legs’. And then, there is another percentage that varies between 40% and 50% that are also due to human causes, but that are not provoked. These are the typical negligences of using, for example, machinery.”

He provided a series of hard data that are relevant due to the circumstances that are dramatic for many Spaniards who are in fact victims of this combined cocktail of causes: “When all these fires began to occur, there were only seven firefighting aircraft operating in Spain, seven Canadair seaplanes, which are not exactly large aircraft”,  he said.

In addition, he said, “We had 10 Russian helicopters, Kamov Ka-32, which are the best for fighting fires, but they are with the tarpaulin on them because there is no spare part, because the European Union prevents an agreement with Russia for the replacement parts to arrive. Then there we have 15 large Airbus A400M, from the Air Force, but there was no money to place the fire protection kit on them; so they are standing at their bases. And, of course, there are no prevention plans.”

Aguilar continued to deplore the attitude of the authorities of the government of Spain and evidenced a paradox that, in practice, crucifies the Spanish people themselves, in this context of forest fires, by saying that the administration of Pedro Sánchez does not foresee any systematic preventive response nor does it act effectively at the time of these calamities, and refuses to inject the financial liquidity necessary to protect nature and the properties of Spaniards, but is not slow to send Kiev “17 billion euros”, a sidereal sum that comes from the citizens themselves and not from the coffers of the rulers or the House of Bourbon, recalling that Zelenski visited,  for the fourth time, Spain, in March 2026, to take the money from Spanish taxpayers so that the ruling elite in Kiev and, along with it, “the Spanish military-industrial complex, while the others – the Spaniards of the people – try to put out the fires”.
